Misdirection

Onward, forward ever tending,
O’er ways of improvement resistless wending:
Plato, Bacon, Hume, Kant, all,
Wholly convinced the ‘plexing veil would fall,
Haughtily bleated, “Advance, skyward fly!”
As if winged inspiration e’er were nigh,
Offering ample pinion our progress to aid –
Straddling a downy current, into heaven fade.
But mind you not my irreverent and insolent way
Of straining to express my inveterate dismay;
For though I don’t doubt the philosophers of old
Had discovered in part truth’s goodly mold –
Yet, upon self-originating reflection I find,
Upon agitating my resolved and down-cast mind –
It’s not on some divine effluence I ride!
Why! to no sure path are my feet tied!
But, glancing round on four walls hung with gloam,
And back down into my maze flecked tome,
It’s clear that within noxious realms I roam.
