Favorite Color Statistics

Tributes

scenario one, the same
as all others:
there is a quiet disconnect
that lingers kindly in the gaps
because dawn kissed day
too often by far—
and day’s essence is bitter
on her lips.
the silence knows no better
than to let itself succumb
to stutters, promises (we let it)
and we cannot breach this because
statistics are not permitted to be
more than they are
and- there are no words to explain
and- no one remembers how to tell a story
anymore.
attempt:
they were beautiful
in a way you didn’t notice
perfect; so every-day steady,
they seemed normal
(they were)
freckle-spattered, maybe
hair up in a ponytail
or maybe cut short, sweet
[take your pick]
too real to believe
and statistics do not have
hobbies or favorite colors or
humanity.
and then they let go (they fell, or
-did they?)
vanished, softly-
reduced to letters, digits, pixels
[data, symbols
that could not conceivably
ever have had
favorite foods, pierced ears, or
one strand of hair
that was always out of place]
clinical is better, it appears
keep it clean
{don't breathe too fast}
but
a note, to those of favorites and features--
we will
not
forget.

Nora... I don't even know where to begin.
In so many ways, I feel as if I'm looking in a mirror and seeing a fifteen old version of me staring back. You know already... you know exactly how I feel about this - even though you never mentioned you were going to write it, even though you never showed it to me. I know you know. And, I suspect you knew I'd understand it. I feel as though I could pull a box out of my closet - and there between the yearbooks and old photos - would be a piece of paper with words almostnearlytooincrediblysimilartothis. You captured part of my life on this page - and... I know you know what I mean by that.
I once met a boy whose favorite color was yellow.
(I'm going to PM you a poem that means a lot to me... I've found it in high school [yes then]... I know you'll understand the connection)
Completely without the ability to express how incredible this is,
SNM |

Amen to this. And I appreciate the self-deprecation - the way you know such words as yours are only a small attempt. But I think it makes yours a worthier attempt than those who go in to say this kind of thing without giving a thought to its, or their, limitations.
May the light reach them, somehow, though someone who is willing to put fear of reaching out to the winds.

That is so utterly beautiful. I don't even know what to say. I just love that you wrote it, really, regardless of HOW you wrote it. Definitely one of my favourites from you.
"a quiet disconnect" - I am madly effing in love with that, those few words may be my favourite part. It just says so much and brought SO many images and feelings into my mind, somehow, just relating that one little line to the topic. Absolutely amazing. |

For each number, existed a face; a life, a laugh, a sweet smile and fireside story to tell. Now...
You and your terrifying reading habits strike worry into my soul. I'd ask for the site, but something tells me I might not have time to read anything else tonight if I do (and Gustave Flaubert or John Morris do not wait, so you should send me the url anyway but hack my computer and stop me from reading it.)
It would be silly to say I know how you feel; it would be silly to say that this is a great poem.
It doesn't seem silly to say that...
You're right. |

You are such a great writer, and the topics you choose so very moving. It is sad how after people die they are recorded as nothing more than one more lost person. Except of course to those who knew them. You did such a wonderful job with this. I hope that some of those people whom you spoke of in your commentary get the chance to read this. |

Oh, Nora. I've thought about this so many times and really, I myself am too jaded to those statistics to think about the people themselves. If only they knew that they're so much more as people than as a statistic. You'd let them know.
I'm subject to cry at this one. Crushingly deep as always (yet always does not mean monotony).
Keep writing,
-Eve. |
