A Candle Fell

The year is sixteen sixty six,
And London’s gripped by plague,
Try to visualize the scene,
Of life back in those days,
The squaled little houses,
The narrow dirty streets,
Waste of all descriptions,
Thrown out for the rats to eat,
And the rats are there in millions,
Outnumbered only by their fleas,
Those almost unseen insects,
That carry the disease,
Hear the children crying,
In their hovels cold and damp,
Hear the ceaseless screaming,
Of victims wracked by stomach cramp,
Listen to the roll of wheels,
As carts are dragged ahead,
And the almost endless chorus of,
“Hear Ye !! Bring out your dead”,
On the outskirts of the city,
The eternal funeral pyres,
As body after body,
Is cleansed of the plague by fire,
Upon the hillside mourners stand,
And watch their loved ones burn,
Knowing well before too long,
That it may be their turn,
But in a bakers shop in town,
A candle burns too low,
The timber framework catches light,
And soon the town’s aglow,
Now many more will lose their lives,
In that inferno’s blaze,
But perhaps it’s true that god above,
Works in such mysterious ways,
For when the blaze had burnt it’s course,
No trace of plague remained,
And all because a candle fell,
One night in Pudding Lane.
