Speed Freak

Contributed by Steve_Ralph on Sunday, 17th November 2002 @ 09:00:00 AM in AEST
Topic: MiscPoems

I felt the car slip and I felt the car slide,
It shook as it came off the road,
It turned over twice and slammed into a tree,
How I survived that one god only knows,

Well I’ve been in my fair share of heartstopping spills,
But I’ve never been in one to match,
The car was a write off and burst into flames,
But I survived it without even a scratch,

I guess luck was with me and I was thrown clear,
For here I stood at the side of the road,
Watching the smoke billow up from the wreck,
Of my car in the canyon below,

I thanked my good fortune and turned on my heels,
To start the long walk back to town,
At least twenty miles from where I had crashed,
But I figured I’d flag some-one down,

Though many cars passed me nobody would stop,
Even those that I thought of as friends,
I vowed that I’d give them a piece of my mind,
When finaly I saw them again,

Two or three hours of walking,
And an ambulance came past me at speed,
All it’s lights flashing and police cars in tow,
Some-body was clearly in need,

When they came back past there were no flashing lights,
They’d obviously got there too late,
Another speed freak not as lucky as me,
That fell on the wrong side of fate,

I arrived back in town by late evening,
Weary from walking and sore,
The dog they called friendly barked at me,
I thought, strange, he’s never done that before,

When I got home the police were just leaving,
My wife was in uncontrolable tears,
I said, “what’s the matter, what happen”?
She didn’t answer, she did not seem to hear,

Then my brother came out of the kitchen,
Dabbing his eyes and his nose,
I said to him, “George what’s the matter”?
But he was too upet to answer I s’pose,

Then he shivered a bit and walked past me,
Almost like he’d not seen me there,
Then my sister the amateur psychic,
Appeared at the top of the stairs,

I waved and she waved back to greet me,
Then came down and stood by my side,
I asked why the others ignored me,
She said, “ they can’t see you, don’t you know that you died”?
