Cricket
Clutching onto a cricket bat
Grasping on for dear life
Watching in dread as the enemy
Draws their arm back with ease
Breaking into a run-
Pace after pace
Stride after stride
Time has slowed down to a trickle.
Sweat slips down your nose
Your hands greasy with fear
People are calling, shrieking-
But all you hear is silence.
Eternity has passed in a second
You struggle to remember it all
All that your PE teacher has told you
‘Strike the ball with this side’
‘Stand this way’
‘Step forward with this foot’
‘Watch the ball’
‘Don’t hit it too early’
‘Don’t hit it too late’
But everything clouds into confusion
Slipping from your memory
Disappearing-
As easily as water escapes a cupped hand.
The ball begins to soar through the air
Hurtling dangerously on the wind toward you
You raise your bat in hope that somehow,
It will make contact-
CRACK
You swing the bat with all your strength
The ball sailing across the pitch
But you don’t stop to look.
You begin to sprint, adrenaline pumping
Again and again
Over and over
Around the cone without pausing
Until the whistle is blown-
It was the end of the game
The finish…
And your team had won.
Cricket-
No big deal.

I thoroughly enjoyed this tho.....

Cricket just isn't cricket. Some find it entertaining, but I think its a waste of time, personally.
Good poem. |
