Refrigerator Horses Dream-Galloping

Contributed by ShadowDaughter on Monday, 18th October 2004 @ 01:40:59 AM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

she drew pictures of horses
blunt pencils, computer paper, worn down erasers

nice, you know:
sometimes their heads were too long
or their saddles drawn wrong
(they always had saddles, always reins,
never riders)
and she didn't always like
how they turned out
but her parents did, always
they said the horses were beautiful
"No idea where she got it from, Mark--
certainly not us; there's not
an artistic gene in the family!"

in school they asked her,
"do you like horses a lot, dear?"
she said, "I guess,"
she didn't particularly care for them, really
they sort of scared her
(not that she'd ever admit it)
and besides, they smelled bad
but nothing stopped the pencil
scritch-scritching away

one day someone told her,
"that's not what horses look like."
she replied, "it isn't?"
and he said, "have you ever galloped?"
whisper: "no."
"Try it sometime. Then draw again."

and it was funny, but after that
she stopped drawing her horses
she liked dogs better, anyhow
and didn't horses smell bad?

(her parents kept the horses
pinned to the refrigerator, flat, dead)

one night--

bays, buckskins, roans, appaloosas
pounding hooves, sides heaving
glistening velvet rainbow coats
silky tails gliding on the wind
and the sound of horseshoes striking the ground,
louder
louder

and then she woke up

(and there was silence)

I didn't really understand this poem fully hope you could explain to me further but somehow, I can feel like you're trying to tell something in this poem but I just can't fathom. But it's a great write with deep meaning. I hope you can tell me its true meaning. Is that ok? I need to know because I can't help falling in love with this poem and I just need to know its meaning desperately. :-)

Hmmm sounds like she finally galloped, if only in dream.
I wonder if she'll draw horses now again?
Makes me feel like I want to know more, or what inspired this, or even if you have some other hidden scene behind the words...
But anyway...you do images so well!!

I've just read this 6 times...and I still can't get my head round it fully.
I can't help thinking that you are not talking about horses..or dogs, but these are just words for something else. Like...i dunno, like if you were talking about poetry (I think I'm wring here) then it would be like...stopping, or changing styles, or writing stories instead. Know what I mean?

I can see how this is sad.

But, I have to ask, does she ever return to her horses?

Sorry if this comment made no sense,
Love the poem hunni,
*hugs* Phil xxx

Nora, this was such a wonderful write. I love horses. I felt like this at the very beginning of this write. Excellent work my friend. *S* Cynthia
