As I walk out of Starbucks, latte in hand, I am engulfed in a sea of late-night tourists and last-minute shoppers.
You are not there.
I find you hiding your habit in an alley around the corner.
I hate it when you suck those cancer sticks.
"We have three minutes to be on the bus." I announce with slight contempt.
You do not reply but start to walk toward the bridge.
As we cross I try to imprint in my memory this night view.
The falls are dancing under brilliantly colored lights.
It looks like a liquidated rainbow suddenly gripped by gravity.
The stars are out and easily visible, even through the glowing strip of tourist attractions behind us.
The water is loud, crashing down and rolling beneath us.
For the first time this summer, it is not hot. There is a cool northern breeze. I cannot tell if that's why I have chill bumps on my arms .
"It's beautiful," I gasp mid-step, "hold on a second."
I stop and fish the change out of my pocket.
"Might as well put this to good use," I shrug and drop some coins over the railing.
They fall for 8 seconds and glitter in the chromatic light.
"Come on, we're already late," you say impatiently.
We continue to trek across the gorge.
All of a sudden you stop and shove me up against the railing so that the only thing between us and a 200-foot fall is a piece of metal.
Before I can protest you stare into my eyes and almost whisper, "I'm the only guy who's ever going to do this to you.
Then you kiss me so hard I can smell the menthol in your nostrils.
My knees buckle.
I feel like I am falling through the air and I half expect to feel the rush of icy water around me.
You lean back with a smirk on your face and declare,
"I just kissed you in two countries at the same time."
My jaw drops as I realize I am leaning on a plaque that reads "U.S./Canada Dividing Line."
I just stand there, thunderstruck, lost for words.
Fortunately fireworks begin to explode over Niagara, adding more bursts of color to the night sky.
It is like looking through a kaleidoscope.
We don't end up paying much attention to them though, and we are definitely late to the bus.
