When you were young and at my side
your eyes were shiny and so wide
with wonder at the things around
from up above to on the ground.
You kept us laughing every day
with funny little things you'd say.
Your mind was always on the go,
just like your feet--were never slow.
A purse you used to keep your cars
A quilt, the road from Earth to Mars.
Your flannel blanket, carried 'round
reminded me of Charlie Brown.
Your bike was hard to try to ride
You learned it because of your pride
No hand signals you used, stinker
used your mouth like a car blinker.
Accidents seemed to follow you.
The doctors thought the same thing too.
You feel out of the doctors door,
you went back in for one stitch more.
When daddy said your blood was black
you asked the nurse if that was fact.
I could have crawled under the bed
But she just said that it was red.
When you were young and learned to bake
you and Sissy made me a cake.
You made half and she the other
it was for me, your pround mother.
You dropped your half onto the floor.
You didn't want to make some more.
You used it on top anyway
and not a word to me did say.
It had a hump in the middle.
The icing helped just a little.
You wrote on it, you little pill
"To Mom who went over the hill."
You've grown now, with kids of your own
I keep in touch with you by phone.
I miss you not here by my side
amid my skirts that you did hide.
You will, one day, be looking back
Maybe remember a train track.
Or you might laugh at some small thing
Like teaching Mason how to sing.
You might be happy or be sad
might remember him being bad.
But all these things are, if you please
the things that give you memories.
I love you more each passing year.
To me you are just very dear.
You work too hard, but that's just you
Your daddy does the same thing too.

That is really precious.
Anyone is lucky to have
a mom who can think this way.
