Topic: Tributes

I have to say I was hesitant at first.
Dark dampness gave me little but muffled sounds and echoes.
Up or down I couldn’t tell
Not that it mattered much
I had the company of my four chambers
Beating rhythmically.

Around the time my fingers came
I recognized
A voice
Over again
Soothing as the rhythmic beat that
Was once my only friend

I couldn’t know your words
But pride and hope and
Love
Translated quickly and became
OurLanguage

My dark home
Glowed
And I began to know it as just a transitory
Place to lay my growing head.
I’m not going to get too comfortable, though.
The landlord will have me out soon.

You tell me your hopes.
It’s more in how you walk and let me in
To every thought conscious or not.
Telling me this
In
OurLanguage.

Sometimes I kick so you’ll touch me.
I’ll wake you up
To get closer.
But you knew that too.
Like I know when worry and sadness creep in
Unnecessarily. But only from love.

I’ll be out soon,
and I will tell you things in their language that
will never be as important as what I don’t speak in
Our own.

you have captured the dialogue of a growing child and it's mother....what a beautiful poem; compassionate, tender and not least of all, empathetic. i don't know how you did this. i've printed it off and put it in my daughter's baby book beside her ultrasound photograph.

I, too, wonder how you have captured this most intimate, transcendent experience. You have given voice to this precious soul I share my space with. Your words echo the anticipation and the bond that intensifies each day. We are honoured by the tribute.
