THOUGHTS OF A SOLDIER

Contributed by thepoet on Wednesday, 13th October 2004 @ 06:51:38 PM in AEST
Topic: Grief

Grains of sand in foreign lands.
Marching forward to kill my fellow man.
In the day, the heat takes your breath away.
The anticipation of battle runs through your blood.
At night it's cold and hard to see.
Is my enemy trying to sneek up on me.
Suddenly without warning the night sky is filled with a bright light.
The sound of gunfire consumes the air.
We have finally met the enemy and me.
Facing each other exchanging gunfire.
The look of fear and survival combine.
A blood curdling cry.
Was that me?
OH GOD ! the searing pain.
I feel my life's essence start to drain.
Tears fill my eyes, i dont want to die.
Not here not like this.
Ithink of my children,my mom my pop.
((CORPMAN!CORPMAN!)) I CRY i'm hit i'm hit.
Don't let me die.
Slowly my eyes grow heavyand start to close.
Suddenly i see my self on the ground.
No more pain just a bright light.
This is good bye from little ole me.
I just gave my life so you can be free.

Though I find this poem sad, and I feel sorry for men and women who die in battle(all over this world) I do not feel the young men and women who are dying in Iraq are giving their lives for my freedom. They are giving their lives for a greedy country that wants oil. I find it sick and sad.

ok, this one needs editing. Try this:

{+we're like} Grains of sand in {+this} foreign land{-}s.
Marching {-forward} to {+the} kill{+ing fields} {-my fellow man.}
In the day, the heat takes your breath away.
The anticipation of battle runs through {+my} {-your} blood.
At night it's cold and hard to see.
Is my enemy trying to sne{+a}{-e}k up on me{?}
Suddenly {-without warning} the night sky {-is} fill{+s}{-}ed with a bright light.
{-The sound of} gunfire consumes the {+silent} air.
We're like grains of sand in this foreign land
Marching to the killing fields
During the day, the heat takes my breath away
And anticipation of battle runs through my blood
At night it's cold and hard to see
Is my enemy trying to sneak up on me?
Suddenly the night sky fills with exploding starshell
And gunfire consumes the silent air
Finally, I am confronted with the enemy... and me...
As we exchange gunfire
Fear and survival combine
A blood-curdling cry...was that me?
OH GOD ! the searing pain!
I sense my life's essence drain
Involuntary tears fill my eyes, I don't want to die
Not here; not like this...
I think of my children, my mom, my dad
((CORPMAN!CORPMAN!)) I CRY...I'm hit, I'm hit
Don't let me die
Slowly my eyes grow heavy
And with the onset of the everlasting light,
...my pain recedes
And I regard myself dispassionately
as I lay there, so still
...and at last...I understand
