Bouncing Ball

Contributed by DragonLuvSong on Tuesday, 12th October 2004 @ 10:03:39 AM in AEST
Topic: toughstuff

At first we had a good game going;
The ball went back and forth real nice.
Smooth rhythms, equal throw length,
And it would come back so easy.

Then the rhythm became irregular;
It started landing closer to me
Sometimes almost hitting me;
And sometimes the ball didn’t bounce back for days;
And sometimes it bounced so early it would roll back and nudge my sneakered foot.

Then I popped the ball;
It was a very small hole,
And it was patched up immediately,
So the ball still bounced.
It has lost a little air and a little elasticity,
But could still go on.

We kept on playing;
With irregular rhythms,
The ball started to hit me,
It came back very fast- almost knocked me down.

Then I popped the ball again;
This time a nice big gash,
It had no air, no bounce,
It has lost everything.

Then after a few days I started a different game.
That one went well for a while but the ball stopped coming altogether.

Then that broken ball was thrown at me;
It hit me many times,
Knocked my glasses to the blacktop.

Then I threw that broken ball away;
I promised myself I would never play with it again,
Never even look at it.

But now the ball is back;
Lying in front of me on the blacktop;
It has no air, no bounce, and no hope.

I need to throw it away again.
I need to remember all the times it was thrown at me- not to me.
And I need to go out and play new games.
