They see her through the window, smiling through her tears,
They saw the way she’d looked at him that day,
And those thoughts, they have her troubled, as they have for years,
For they know it’s her that stole his heart away.
They met when they were children, their mother’s - they were friends,
And they grew up really hating one another,
They were the worst of enemies, and the worst of friends,
She treated him just like an older brother.
On the day she graduated, her mum and dad were there,
And so was he, his mum and dad were too,
She smiled at them all, so glad that they had come,
To share her thoughts and hopes of life anew.
Thanksgiving came around, they were all together again,
All Laughing and all sharing a toast,
When she looked across the table, that boy was now man,
And had disappeared, as if he were a ghost.
Excused, she went out searching, looking all around,
To see if there was something she could do,
As she came into a clearing, in the middle of the yard,
She saw him sitting down, he saw her too.
“You look so amazing” he calmly said to her,
“I’ve loved you ever since I was a kid,
But I just couldn’t tell you for fear that you would say
That you hated me and then you ran and hid.”
He pulled her slowly to him, and gave her a gentle kiss,
And then she slowly kissed him softly back,
“I love you too” she whispered, “I really, truly do,
And having you in my life is all I lack”
She heard a voice then calling them, to come into the house,
So hand in hand they walked across the lawn,
How was she to know that in a year or two,
She would be alone and he be gone.
As they reached all the commotion, their parents, looked and stared,
And their mother’s both had smiles upon their faces,
“At last you are together, we’ve been waiting all these years.
And we’re glad it’s finally happened, goodness, gracious”
His father, he then stood, and sadly he looked down,
And looked from him to her, his face emotion,
“We should not go in haste, for we have little news,
Our son has been conscripted to fight for our nation.”
“He leaves at oh-eight-hundred, I think that’s how its said,
To fight for our nation in World War Two,
And I’m sure he’ll be back sooner, than later” he said,
“I’m sure I would, my girl, if I had you.”
The night had surely ended, the guests were all in bed,
They sat under the sky, for she was crying,
“Don’t be afraid my dear, I’ll come back for you,
For I’m not going over there and dying.”
They had a night of passion, as any couple would,
And he vowed to her that he would never die,
She smiled up at him, and looked into his eyes,
As tears did form and he began to cry.
Two years went slowly past, when, on that faithful day,
A knock upon the door woke her from sleep,
Staring at the soldier that stood across from her,
The red letter slipped from her hands down to her feet.
“Mummy, who’s that man?” said a little girl
“Is Daddy coming home, and can I meet him”
For she was his daughter, whom he would never meet,
And the girl he loved would never again greet him.
With a little kiss, like on that thanksgiving night,
When he promised her with all his heart and soul,
That he would come back for her, like a handsome knight,
And sweep her off her feet, till they grow old..
