Shhh

Contributed by LJ on Thursday, 14th November 2002 @ 03:30:00 PM in AEST
Topic: Patriotic

Shh, the silence of sorrow is all around
As we walk this hallowed ground
Each step through time we can’t get back
How do we measure what we lack?

The stones lie in rows of white
Lives lost in a noble fight
Sons and daughter that they are
Sent to fight in wars afar

Survivors lost in memories
They have lived our history
Buried deep within the soul
Fragments of a life once whole

Reflections in the mirror last
Glimpses of a dark and frightful past
A moment, a year, a decade, a life
Blood, sweat, tears and strife

As time goes by, let us not forget
The many lives we’ve never met
Each soul to freedom has surrendered
A story so often gone unheard

They fight the fights, not pick the battles
In their memories the gun still rattles
Nights with combat and casualties
For them the wars never cease

More than words can express, or money could buy
For in every fight a part of them died
Not quite adequate, not quite enough
Thank you, for being so tough

Thank you for fighting the fight
Thank you for standing up for what is right
Thank you for defending the defenseless
Thank you for protection in times of distress

Thank you for bravery unheard
Thank you for freedom reassured
Thank you for doing what you do
Thank you for being you
