Generations Of Bridges

The seas of the world,
the unsafe lands and high up ridges,
man could not conquer them all
so they invented and created bridges.
They stretch up high across deep ravines,
some from mountain to mountain,
across rivers deep and cliff so steep
waterfalls and fountains.
The materials and constructions differ,
from decades and eras that have passed,
as each generation has manufactured them
the quality has long since surpassed
from wooden unstable ladders,
that rock precariously in the breeze,
to monumental concrete erections
ornate with a decorative frieze.
The mighty iron pillars,
of rust and tarmac laid roads,
to the dainty little arches
made from old slate stones.
If we were without all bridges,
without mans great logical notion,
we could not transport ourselves and others
across land, rock face and oceans.

It's hard to write poetry about things we take for granted, but this was nicely done. You picked a tough subject and took it for a ride... across the bridge of words. Well done! |
