Scarlet letter on my chest,
Spat upon by the moral folk
A rough-sewn ‘A’ for my trespass,
Lucky I escaped the yoke.
I bow my head as others pass,
My shame displayed for all to see
They curse me as the adulteress,
They cannot touch the inner me.
For his part he hangs his head,
Ignoring me ‘cept for furtive glance
A puritan tempted to another’s bed,
But he knows that he shared the dance.
I bear the mark but not with shame,
A badge of honour, if you will
I tasted love I cannot name,
I do not think I’ve had my fill.
In times to come other girls,
Will be criticised for their wanton ways
But all will bear their little pearls,
And remember them as better days.
For my part I bide my time,
Waiting for when the moment’s right
To seek out love that’s truly mine,
And enjoy the pleasures of the night.
I’ll find someone who knows no shame,
One whose willing, for their part
To temper desires that have no name,
And abide within my scarlet heart.

Poet at Industrial Colosseums Unbound
Says:
For someone who hasn't read Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel you sure have the gist of the story down. Although, the story also concerns the anguish a reverend feels for having commited adultery with the woman.
Well written verse!
Well done! |

Wow, Spike! Geez - you nailed it! I HAVE read Scarlett Letter BUT honestly, I don't think I could have written anything better (or even, as good as) this on the topic!
I bear the mark but not with shame,
A badge of honour, if you will
I tasted love I cannot name,
I do not think I’ve had my fill.
The entire piece is fabulous, but the stanza above jumped out at me somehow. Even without detail, it speaks volumes I think about the heart of the novel. I did struggle a tad with the line immediately preceeding this stanza... it's too.... blunt or something, I thought. I think I'd prefer that line softened up a bit (maybe... ending with something like "haven taken the chance..."). Just a thought....
Seriously well done!
