High as a Kite

Contributed by spike on Friday, 24th September 2004 @ 11:36:19 PM in AEST
Topic: ambiguous

Lifted up into the breeze,
A gust of wind the force of flight
My tail fluttering as you please,
As I swiftly rise towards the light.
I can’t believe I am so high,
Below me the admiring crowds
I gracefully arc across the sky,
My destination is the clouds.

To my left an awesome sight,
Kites of every shape and size
Their colours shimmering in the light,
Diamond, box and delta rise.
Some sing and whistle with each gust,
Some flutter in a gentle tease
A tubular kite as big as a bus,
slowly rolls into the breeze.

And to my right and set apart,
Their strings glistening with powdered glass
The fighters practice their deadly art,
The gaudy kites not in their class.
A dip, a feign, a somersault,
A fluid, barracuda shift
All executed without fault,
Another enemy set adrift.

And at the point of tautest string,
Champing at the tethering twine
All attempts to reel me in,
Only serve to snap the line.
For good or ill I’m now alone,
The sudden freedom, sweet release
A surge of panic, my anchor gone,
Followed by a sense of peace.

I can’t predict how the wind will blow,
The path an unmapped curve of blue
My destination, whose to know,
That takes me further away from you.
Now a pinprick in the sky,
Beyond all hope of any return
A splash of colour bids goodbye,
A wafting kite to parts unknown.

On a whim I skimmed through to a title that caught my psyche. After reading this I determined this should be your eulogy poem a hundred years from now, hopefully.
A classic display of your genius, brilliance and downright enjoyability!
