18 Year Old Girls...
18 year old girls just don't get me anymore,
I met one the other night,
We were out of the town,
We were knee-deep in glitz,
We were both taking pills to help us touch the stars,
She took a good look at me,
She said, 'hi baby'
And she smiled, her eyes filled with blue light from the heavens above
Yeah, she looked me over,
Then she said, 'goodnight sweet-heart, you're too old, don't waste my time'
Yeah, she shut those lil' blue eyes down, and she went away
Into the soft night where all the Queens must forever go
For a while, I was sad
For a while, I looked at myself in the mirror
& every line on my face felt like a highway that I rode all thru the night
& with each mile, there came a price, for the prize
& for every victory, there was a fallen Lord to mourn
& for every Light there is a Dark.
It's not like it used to be,
It's not like it used to be,
18 year old girls just don't get me anymore,
They don't get me anymore
I guess some people would say it's because I'm not interesting
I guess some would just call it bad luck
But hey, I just smile
You can't stay young forever,
You can't always put your heart up for sale...
I was on the market,
I hung down at the meat factory
I tasted all the things you buy there,
And I got sold babe, yeah I got sold
To the highest bidder, to the cheapest wave of the richest hand
It's not a bad thing I've gotten older,
You get to see just about it all,
You find out what happens when the heart breaks,
The blues only last for awhile,
And there will always be another heart.
There will always be a new girl,
There will always be a brighter day
It might not be tomorrow, but honey, it will come in time.
I remember when I was 18,
I sat beside my girl, looking out over the Ocean
Her black hair blowing in the beach winds,
We were just two kids from the suburbs,
We were so close to giving it everything we ever had,
We always said this was the best thing that ever happened to us
I felt like it could have lasted forever,
But when I flick thru the scrapbook
I remember it was just a Summer,
& we thought we were so cool, we thought we were so cool
We thought we didn't need the rules,
And I wonder where you are,
I wonder where you are, now,
Because that was 18 for me,
That was 18 for me.
I only had eyes for the one I loved,
& even now when I lose myself in the waves,
I pretend the years have slipped away,
& you are still with me in the Sea,
I'm holding your body
I'm kissing your memory
May the gentle surf winds carry me to the arms of another,
Another heart amongst the many in this small place,
Because in time all the wanderers will find a place to come Home to.
