Caught in the middle.
Not by choice. Not by contract.
Just the same, they're trapped.
Hit from one or the other.
The bullets smiling, uninvited,
Making acquaintances
Face-to-face, so to speak.
And boots toss them aside,
Filling in holes and ditches.
Then wiping themselves clean
Before marching on and on and on.
