Like a wolf he scoured Perths lonely streets and alleyways at night
On the walls he cast a shadow in the oh so eerir light
Now and then he stopped and softly spoke to others of the street
Shared a smoke and listened to their stories bitter sweet
He never lingered in one place the urge to move was strong
He'd wave farewell and stride into the shadows and was gone
These inner city alleyways for years had been his home
He had many friends here on his patch and yet he walked alone
From twilight to the break of dawn his routine was the same
A king caring for his subjects in this never ending game
A warm hug here a kind kiss there, friendships hand always extended
A comforting word a vision shared broken hearts so often mended
Sometimes he'd sit in reverie and through the prism of his mind
Memories would softly filter of another place another time
He'd once worn silk and sable had a mansion by the sea
But his wealth and al its trappings only brought him misery
In his mind the perfect vision a smiling face beneath a veil
And the uttered words of long ago as he knelt at loves own rail
To have to hold to cherish and always love eternally
But the sacred vows uttered that day were never meant to be
In his quest for fame and fortune he'd neglected his young bride
But his conquests in the corporate world filled his heart with pride
The gloating king of finance armed with the Midas touch
Bragged to all that his one true love was the one called lady luck
But all of that was shattered when the market crashed that year
He lost his gold and all he owned and realized his greatest fear
He was left alone to ponder the strange twists and turns of life
For the greatest loss he once had said was his daughter and his wife
Cowed and sadly broken he slunk into the waiting night
And thus began the saga of his never ending flight
For he'd fled into obscurity even discarding his name
But in these dismal streets and alleyways he earned ever- lasting fame
Broken men and battered women ragged children clothes askew
Among these trodden down and weary somehow hope was born anew
For the love he spread among them seemed to ease their inner pain
And with gentle words he challenged them to dream the dream again
The Wolf has long since passed away still the memory remains
Of this gentle father figure chasing us children in the rain
Each year the many that he touched all gather in September
We dance we sing we celebrate the Wolf we all remember

This was an excellent read; good work!
So refreshing from the general, "Oh..oh...I'm sad so I'm going to cut myself," crap that blisters these pages.

I think I would have liked to meet this Wolf. He sounds like a weathered but beautiful soul.
Excellent write Fwog, as always!

I had the strangest and strongest feeling of deja vu when I read this poem, it's not based on any story I might have heard a few years ago is it? I'm probably imagining things. Anyway this was really moving, and a fascinating mini-bio too. |
