Battered Bride

Contributed by Kiz on Saturday, 9th November 2002 @ 10:30:00 AM in AEST
Topic: AngryPoetry

I’d watch her walk by every day
Smile, but I didn’t know what to say
I know he beat her, I could hear her anguished screams
I told my children they were just bad dreams.

They belonged to the pretty girl upstairs
Who fell deeply in love
Then stripped of every ounce of pride
When she said I do and became a battered bride.

Once upon a time turned into pure hell
She didn’t have the courage to tell
I asked her once and she lied
My help was denied.

She was found yesterday, hanging in the kitchen with a new rope braid
And a note saying she would never again be afraid
He dug her grave long ago
But her death had been quite slow.

Very sad. Unfortunately I know what it is like to go through something like that, I was battered by my first boyfriend, and I also watched my mom go through it with one of her boyfriends. The good news it that we are both ok and finally very happy.

I was a battered bride in my first marriage but I got out intact. A lot of women don't. I'm happily married now and have a good life. My husband is a wonderful and sensitive man. I always feel horrible for those who don't make it. This is a great poem and if more people knew that would help a lot.
