Always with the cooler breeze of afternoon she would appear
His racing heart skipped a beat as she surfaced from the waves
Barely a ripple as she swam into view
Always furthest from the safety of the shore
Something mysterious, intriguing, intoxicating
Led him like a ritual to the water's edge
He could never venture closer for one simple fact
Beset too much with childly ills he had never learnt to swim
Now his destiny blocked by a barrier of blue
She too seemed locked out of his deepest reach
Beguiling beauty, the prisoner of the sea
Though far away he felt the yearning passion in her eyes
This one clear day she did not come
After midnight storm had vented her anger on the sea
Snarled her white teeth against the mighty rocks
Now it was calm, waves merely caressed
Eeriness pervaded, a heavy curtain of still
A seabird broke the silence as it swooped along the beach
Set against white sand, pale and still
The face he recognised but puzzled by the form
Part of land yet strangely part of sea
Mermaid lay serene like an angel sleeping
For one cold heart the other sank like a heavy stone
Hope smashed to pieces, threads of dreams all torn
Tenderly he gathered her in the safety of his arms
Walked her slowly back to where he knew they must depart
Though she could not return the kiss
He felt the urge to give it as a parting gift
As the water crept up to his waist
He realised he could go no more
From his cradle he released her
Waves like reaching arms seemed to carry her away
Back to the depths from where she came
A vow he made there, a pledge to return
Though the beauty now would always be less the beauty of one
Slowly sinking to her watery grave
