Grief

And as I held you as you died,
I felt your life slip slowly by.
It leaked as surely a your blood,
A perfect crimson in so much mud.
Your pain was such that as you lay,
You could not here all I had to say.
Words of my love fell on unhearing ears,
Which I will regret all my years.
How cold you were, where once was warm,
Your flawless face was pale and drawn.
Your eyes were dark as ebony,
With all the hurt and agony.
And I thought that I could not bear,
Your final blank and rigid stare.
And yet I found some comfort in,
The small time of your suffering.
The shock and grief will be so near,
For every day in every year.
I find some peace in that we’ll be together,
For pain cannot last and love is forever.
