Johnny panicked me and made me afraid,
He lived in a field of dreams,
I don’t know what he’s capable of today,
I don’t know all he says,
But he whispers things to me,
Things I can’t ever repeat.
His field is greener than jealously,
His field of dreams trickles onto all that he sees,
Yesterday; his gas hand grappled his throat once again,
Maybe this time everyone will stop thinking it’s pretend,
You can’t keep an eye on everything you own my friend,
Johnny; your soul was never pure,
But you’ve made your home feel so secure,
Everyone you touch tells you:
“Its time to let go”
They don’t say it,
But you can feel it,
Their navy hands tell you so.
Today; you race away the kids,
Into your clandestine room,
If you could grant yourself one more wish,
I wonder what it would be,
Maybe to stop writing;
To scythe your dreams away,
To touch life once again,
Give us all an authentic smile,
Tell us all it’s over and you’re alive again!
And escape your field of dreams,
But you can’t do that,
So you cut yourself away from them all,
One more time,
And Panicked; one last time,
As the hands of gas grappled your insides
The fifties and you died,
Sylvia, your field of dreams is now always alive.

AUTHOR NOTE:
Hey Jenni, this poem is playing homage to Sylvia Plath one of my favourite writers - who wrote of a character called Johnny Panic (and the Bible of Dreams) - I'm just trying to create new meanings behind her character to illustrate how closely linked she is her character.
The final stanza is more to do with her demise than of Johnny, – she famously committed suicide whilst leaving her children protected upstairs.
I hope that answers you question thank you so much for commenting on my work though – your very kind!

Thanks for the explanation, Rod.. I must confess, for a teacher, I am not well-read..lol... I am not familiar of Sylvia's work, but you make it sound so interesting with this poem. Perhaps I'll have to visit a library or bookstore soon.....
Thanks again for sharing this...

Excellent write. I never could get into her work. She was just too 'odd' and dark for my particular taste. Yet she was very talented. One life wasted.

I wish I understood it ...to me it seems that someone is wanting to hold on to material things..and not living life.. still living in a time that has passed . I don't know..but I liked it. Odd that. |
