Eternality
(n.) A life or mechanism destined to doom; an inevitable infection with neither cure nor release; a terminally ill patient, system, or thing.
fig. an inevitable progression toward some universal end
We called them once, upon their beds
The walking corpses, living dead
Who hobbled on within their dreams
And woke to back-aches, out of screams
They gasped and wheezed their final breaths
(not knowing which one’s last)
Escaping to their inner deaths
(where lines and wisdom’s cast)
We used to dither by their beds, not knowing what to do
Wishing we could save their lives, praying through and through
Yet have you seen a dying man cry out for other’s help?
Have you felt the final calm before their one last yelp?
(For in the seas of memories there’s more than fish and kelp;
Inlaid inside—by none descried—mementos, wishes, whelps)
It’s in their eyes, you’ll see the words
The final flash of truth
That tails behind the clouds and birds
And all in youth have sleuth
We used to shake our heads and say,
“At least he died in peace;
At least he lays on flower beds
And fares the fleeting fleece.”
But as I watch the climbing calm and recognize the grace
As I study each detail as pain precedes the pace
As I gaze into their features, upon their bed of lace
I see the picture slowly clear
(and I see my own face.)
We used to call them, doomed to die
(Well I did, anyway)
But now we smile and pass them by
(I know they’ll live today)
Their state of calm before the storm
A life in the hurricane’s eye
And though their fingers aren’t as warm
No time, for them, walks by.
They live in worlds where nothing moves
They sleep in quiet’s palm
Where headless horsemen hide their hooves
Respecting elder’s calm
We used to say they’d pass away
And soon their bed would fill
We used to say (I, anyway)
"They’re gone without their pills."
Yet fighting, struggling to the end, they survive their maladies
Living, giving (they don’t pretend), defying practicalities
(—We numbered them fatalities
But now they’re Eternalities.—)

I think we all need a new superlative to describe this.
Anyone any suggestions?

Excellent! My opinion only, but I find alot of this is true. "Their state of calm before the storm". You painted a great picture in my mind's eye.

Grandimagniosifant ~ I think that about sums it all up in one word !!!
Goes back and reads again in awe
Forget roses, I'm gonna go dig up the whole dang bush !!!
Definition - grandimagniosifant
Extolling the utmost and highest praise allowed, when stunned into stammered mutterings of barely intelligible comprehesive dialog, by anything extremely beautiful to behold.
