Family Memories
---------------
I was born one of eight children,
To a coal-miner and his wife.
A middle child, a happy boy,
Who lived a pretty good life.
My father was a worker,
Who saw a forty-hour workweek by Wednesday night.
A midnighter, a Tipple runner,
I’d see him at first light.
My mother, what a saint,
The glue that held us together.
A loving woman, a gentle soul,
Who could handle any weather.
A Christian family we were,
Brought up in the way of God.
It taught us to never fear,
Even when times got hard.
We grew up knowing respect,
For others and ourselves.
Tight-knit we became,
Living in one house.
Extras we never had,
Hungry we never went.
Hand-me-downs were common place,
From the oldest they were sent.
Happy we always were,
Deprived of nothing real.
Games around the table,
For entertainment filled the bill.
One by one we all grew up,
Graduated and left the house.
Founds jobs, and found our purpose,
And with God’s help a loving spouse.
Looking back on those years,
To my face brings a smile.
It’s amazing through the struggles,
How everything worked out well.
Today my family is still together,
Though missing one important piece.
My father had passed on,
The Lord gave him peace.
We gather around for birthdays,
And holidays thought-out the year.
For the love that was bestowed in us,
Keeps us always near.
What a blessing we were given,
Born into a family full of love.
To this day I drop to my knees,
And thank the Lord above.

This is wonderful, Jeff. I think family is our first lesson in life on value and respect and love. This was written wonderfully. Rita |
