Then, 1969
she was crying
Vietnam stole him away
and he's not coming back
and the words she wrote
for the funeral
looked like whispering smoke
on the paper
as the rain pelted outside
and the wail of the baby
rose and fell
Now, 2004
her granddaughter cries
this time, its Iraq
the war stole her heart
and now, maybe her granddaughters
looking at the old picture
she dries her tears to answer the door
but this story, unlike hers
has a happy ending
....for the soldier has come home

In spite of your comment on this piece, I think it is excellent and put across so well. The feeling came through loud and clear as they were meant too.

beautiful poem. I wish I would get a letter saying my marine was coming home. But he is no longer a part of my life as much as I wish he was. He is in Iraq however...just went back. I just hope more people will have these happy endings with their loved ones coming home safetly! |
