A clump of mold coated and strangled
A sick spruce, warped and mangled
It, making it look like the crumbling dead.
The tree bent and the tarry sap it bled
Curbed the illness that was smeared
Over its surface. The victim neared
The ground as it leaned over,
And you could see the specter of death hover,
Waiting to pacify to tortured, resilient tree
Whose roots calcified it with the limestone underneath
The layers of dirt and water and compost.
Atop this crippled tree, and almost
Fifty feet away, I could see the everbrown
Turn evergreen, as I reached the crown
That had resisted an epoch of advances
By death and mold and somehow dances
On, forever in avoidance in its pretty quarantine.

Love the imagery. This portrays to me the mind of someone with Alzheimer's - their memory rotting away but somewhere inside a speck of recognition lives on. Hah but otherwise it's a pretty cool nature piece, original and well-written and when I noticed the rhyming at the end of the poem and reread it after that I thought, and I quote, "ooh". You truly have a poet's tongue here Mike - "forever in avoidance in its pretty quarantine." |
