Today I went out on my porch
to see how my flowers grow
Instead I found a baby
about sixteen months or so
He was walking through my flowers
chasing along a bird or two
I was so scared and frightened
this child was one I never knew
He was wearing nothing but a diaper
a bath was called for too
I looked and saw nobody else
Dear Lord...what shall I do
I said to him...hello sweatheart
I wonder... where do you belong
I reached out to this little one
this seemed to me all so wrong
He came to me so easily
and snuggled in my arms
My heart just melted way down deep
children have so many charms
So here I am... out on my porch
wearing jammies and no shoes
I had no choice...down the street we went
not the morning I would choose
As we reached the corner of my street
I saw a little girl at play
I asked her if she knew this child
yep... was all that she would say
I asked her to get Mother
off into the house she went
I waited there... forever
my patience now is getting spent
Out she comes ...her smile large
I am still holding this stranger's child
Oh... I wondered where he was
she said in a voice so mild
I brought your baby back...I said
she smiled and went inside
The child of which I am speaking
still on my hip... did ride
I asked the daughter to get the mom
off inside she went...again
Mom poked out her head
just put him down...said with a grin
They are my brand new neighbors
bought the house right down the block
I know she is so busy
she has a door she needs to lock
I am so very grateful
that I found her child so small
For there really is that chance
she mightn't have gotten him back...at all
I hope you will not misunderstand
it's not that I wanted her to thank me
There was no real emotion there
when I brought her back her baby

I was left quite confused by the final stanza. You related the story well - nice rhymes and all- but by insisting that there was no emotion 'there' when you returned this neighbours' baby, you're asking me to disbelieve that
"My heart just melted way down deep"
And of course, you play down the mother's reaction, which is slightly strange.
Oh well - 'twas an interesting read, at any rate.
Keep writing. |

I did not "play down " anything, she showed no emotion when this happened. Believe me, I was,and still am, as confused by this as you are. Thank you for the read and your time to comment.
