They signed the documents that told us that we’ve all been set free
Then they guaranteed we could become anything we wanted to be
The labor laws clearly stated that we didn’t have to work for free
Three acres and a mule but we never even got a yard with a tree

Yes, we’re in America the beautiful, home of the brave land of the free
This land in which we live is populated with people of all nationality
A land so rich in resource that there should never be poverty
A land so beautifully preserved that no other country should compete
Land where all of our forefathers died to save our dignity and pride
But the twenty-first century gives a view from a totally different side:

People are dying from diseases that we never heard of before
Families are on the street hungry, and don’t have homes anymore
Mothers have an independence that they never even dreamed of
It’s made some very good men say, “to hell with falling in love!”
Children are having children, and even they are born grown
The jails have people in them who never done anything wrong
I don’t want to sound conceited, when I say that we’ve been cheated
They declared us our freedom, but the purpose has been defeated
The government won’t do anything, and I hope that you agree
Somebody must have lied when they said that we all were FREE!!!!!!

Unfortunately it's freedom to *pursue* happiness, not the guarantee that we'll get it. :-( As long as we have to deal with other people who may not fit in whatever ideal world we imagine, total contentment is not possible for anyone. There are moments of happiness - everyone does have them, but it's the process of being able to pursue our dreams that makes us free, not the granting of all our wishes. I wish it weren't that way, but it is.
If anything, we've cheated ourselves by trying to provide some guarantee of happiness -- because when you guarantee some people happiness, you automatically take away other people's ability to pursue it.
Still, if that is what you expect from freedom, you expressed it very well.

Such a wonderful write- I feel the anger and emotions! Nicely done, but I believe it was 40 acres and a mule that was promised. Either way- your write is brilliant!
