As twilight passes into dark
And diamond stars the evening spark
I trawl the rooms and corridors,
And pace the stairs and all the floors
A newfound surge of energy
Has arrived to awaken me
And enliven forces, somewhere deep,
As other wind down into sleep
Common sense urges slumber
- One is such a lonely number
Despite the newly restless mind,
Sleep debt must be paid in kind
But like a punchy boxer trying to fight
I resist the lure of Mother Night
Until all rationale is spent,
And to sleep and dreams I must relent
Finally, I succumb,
My eyes half closed, my features numb
The clock long passing Midnight’s crest,
When sleep is deep and at its best
Yet still I struggle like I’m drowning
Even as the new sun’s crowning
Treading waters of night’s dark sea,
Afraid of it engulfing me
When dawn trumpets all to rise
-The part of day I most despise
A heavy cowl still wraps my mind,
Tight in a soporific bind
Blearily I trudge downstairs
Yawning like a wakened bear,
Searching for that kinetic spark
Elusive until all is dark
There are owls and there are larks
Feathered kin but poles apart
The early risers and late sleepers,
The doona snugglers and hallway creepers
And hummingbirds, in between
Who quietly survey the scene
Knowing that their pattern's best,
To live the day and have their rest.

Perfectly constructed, well rhymed, fabulous flow, great word choice, wonderfully creative... and... (sigh) too darn relatable. (Are you getting that I really like this???)
I absolutely loved this! From start to finish. I'd cut out my favorite parts and show them off here - but - I'd wind up re-posting the entire piece. Geez! I wish I had written this!!!
Thinking mornings are highly overrated anyway,

What a wonderful poem! I am an insomniac, big time *looks down at her being in her clothes, lights on, bed not ready for sleep and it being almost 11:30 at night* *cough* Anyway, I really liked your poem. It was beautiful and described how I mostly feel when I can't sleep. Something that also attracted me to read your poem was that you said "For all those insomniacs glowing in the dark in front of their pc screens or reading Harry Potter for the umpteenth time", because that, ironically enough, describes me personality almost exactley. I stay up late on my computer and stay up late reading Harry Potter...so this seemed like the perfect poem for me....You did a great job and this poem is one of my favorites...Not exactley dark and dreary, but also not exactley happy-go-lucky. Great job! Keep writing! |

You definately capture the feeling of sleeplessness, and of the morning thereafter.
The flow and rhyme are wonderful. You truely have a great talent! |

I love that. I'm an insomniac and this happens to me all the time. I also end up reading Harry Potter for like the zillionth time in the middle of the night. |

What emotion you have caught with your words, S.
Truly an insomniacs plight .. a curse, unless of course, the
responsibilties of daylight do not imprison you, then,
being a night owl is FABULOUS!! When I was a teenager,
my favourite thing to do on the weekend was to see how
long I could last before the sandman stole in and carried
me to dreamland .. (screaming and kicking all the way ! :P)
As an adult .. well .. let's just say you captured the
sentiments masterfully in your write. :)
Excellent piece.
