Spirit Without a Home

Contributed by puppy_dog_eyes on Thursday, 26th August 2004 @ 12:24:19 PM in AEST
Topic: SadPoetry

Neon lights flashed above the tourist throng
So many people with no particular place to go
Unhurried through the busy streets we walked
Merged into a mass of wandering souls

A crowd had gathered at the corner of the square
Like a swarm of bees amassed together, jostling for a view
Approaching I was shocked at what came into sight
One fully grown bear, led slowly on a rope

With a ring through his nose he looked lost and alone
A mixture of fear and sorrow in his big brown eyes
Have a picture with the bear the man yelled at the gathered crowd
Very cheap today, for you a special price

The price paid already was too great for me
Money to give back his freedom and dignity I would have gladly spent
To watch him run through forests much more of a delight
Than the tourist curiousity he had now become

As the cameras clicked, I turned away
No more pain did I wish to see
But the memory will linger of a once proud beast
A spirit without a home

Awwww brought tears to my eyes this was so upsetting but wonderfully written.
No one should be allowed to mistreat animals in this way for others pleasure it is so cruel.

That was a spectacular write about a terrible situation. Just because they call them human, doesn't make them all humane.
Wonderful write.

It is very apparent that this experience affected you greatly. It is heartbreaking that things like this are allowed to take place. Very cruel. I love how you took such an ugly event and turned it into a very touching poem. Great piece.

Very sad indeed. It should be against the law to take an animal away from it's natural habitate.
Luv, huggs, sad,
