Away go the flatlands
Quilted in fields of intricate green,
Breast-like with pasture and
Mushroomed with woods
Tilting at old Saxon churches;
Sniffing the salt in the
Cold northern sea,
Sensing invasion
Away from the eye go
The delicate veins, the streams
And the secretive rivers;
With shiver and fur of
Each tiny heartbeat,
Fox and the owl and
Dirty faced swans,
Old names corrupted
Away from the modern
The cottages stand, flowered
And scented, lost in the heart
Of some history beating;
Pretending with cricket
And afternoon tea,
Saluting the oak
With the faintest of smiles

In person, I hope one day to visit the setting that was painted in my mind by those words. A wonderful write. Thank you for the mental photo.
