I Was Once a Poet II (The Moon of the Desert)

Contributed by Jarmen_Kell on Wednesday, 25th August 2004 @ 10:45:50 PM in AEST
Topic: poets

Arabic ('Arabiyyah'):

English:

"I used to think, that my pen was
Strong like the wind,
Mighty like the sword
And I was wrong:
The Poet indeed is a weakling,
Like the moon in the desert
That borrows glory
From the sun, for itself."

Wow... yeh... I've read over a few times myself and I got lost in it. There is an awful lot to ponder on here! I like this piece very much... though, stubbornly - I don't want to agree with it's message. Whether or not I'm in agreement... I am rather impressed.

Thinking words are powerful things,
SNM

This is one of those poems that stands alone forever as a rare, profound-truth kind of masterpiece. Like the others I reread this several times for experimentation and was struck by how sometimes it sounds like a conclusive declaration, and other times like an unfinished rising-dawn song. Wonderful writing :)

Very proverbial, I liked it very much.
