In 8th grade,
Sister Regina proclaimed:
“’Mad’ magazine is Communist propaganda;
reading it could damn your soul!”
She also said:
“All babies that die unbaptized go to limbo;
they have the stain of original sin
on their souls. But, all aborted babies
are innocent martyrs and go directly to heaven.”
I asked if we would be better off,
if we all had been aborted.
I failed religion that year.
Sister Regina told my parents
I was reading ‘Mad’ magazine.
Later, in high school,
Brother Larry joked,
“The church only recognizes limbo
as a dance, everyone is innocent
until they reach knowledge
and awareness of their actions.”
But, who sets the bar?
Are we still unaware
or are we all stuck
in limbo, doing a dance,
seeing just how low we can go?

I lost a baby that died at 8 days of age...my mother-in-law was a catholic and wanted the dead baby to be babtized...which the church was glad to do for a tidy sum...and they add the dead child to the rolls of the church. So foolish to my way of thinking. Another money maker...not something a God of love would ask or sanction...now the LimboRock...that's another story LOL...great poem!!! |

Ho! hooooo-o! Another rebel against Catholic School indoctrination from the nuns a brothers.
They really do have a skewered view on society which can be summed up in a word: narrow.
I really enjoyed your poem; it took me back to the many strappings I endured from the good Sisters of St Joseph while I attended St. Mary's.
Although, time has softened my recollections of those ladies, I'd have to say that they failed utterly to instil good Catholic values in my character. And the few that did take hold; the navy soon knocked out of me from my sheer selfish desire to survive life on a messdeck.
Heh, heh...the Protestants 'ud never believe even half the stuff we had to put up with. It totally screwed up most of the girls from having good healthy pre-marital sex.
I swear, my wife still has guilt even after 27 years of marriage. I guess the thinking was, "If I can't enjoy it; why should anyone else."
See what your innocent poem has done? It makes people think back to stuff that we thought was long buried...sonamobeetch!*g*
In any event, this is one of the gems amid so much dross, and I thank you.
Stoney

I really enjoyed this. Honestly..... do people really think Limbo exists. I don't. All religion has become today is just a word. So many mispractices. All it is , is good and bad and heaven or hell. I find from m y own experiences that a lot of religous people are full of crap. Well, good write.
ALINA
p.s. You seem like a good person gone rebel ( in a good way.) lol |

But, who sets the bar?
An excellent question... and I concur with your apparent conclusion that it is not necessarily those who present themselves as experts on the matter.
I absolutely love how this is presented. The best I can put it (drawing on the topic at hand) - is... it's not preachy... but it is definitely profound. I nearly skipped this one because of the title... because it was yours, I didn't - guessing that there would be something more than expected here. I'm so very glad I didn't... for it seems I guessed correctly.
Dancing, I hope, with some amount grace,
SNM |
