Twelve and thirteen year old girls
tom-boy tough with braces and pig-tails,
hang out, chew gum and smoke cigarettes
on the corner of Wilson and Marlboro.
They speak a salty dialogue peppered
with four letter words, chattering about
the latest fab fad, who’s in and what’s cool,
what’s out and who’s a fool.
Torn between hop-scotch and jump rope,
tight tee-shirts and training bras
they practice to be flirtatious and playful
and suffer from pubescent pop-star
infatuations.
They are budding flowers waiting
to be plucked by high school boys,
preppies, greasers or jocks, driving
fancy cars, motorcycles and pick-up trucks.
Their early spring foreshadows a sultry summer.

TOTALLY LOVED THIS POEM !! GREAT WRITE !! This reflects the confusing stage of adolesence !! So many young girls are just like how you described. Still children but trying to be adults. Before you know it.... they fall " victim" to highschool boys and become pregnant, drop outs or druggies. At least that's how it is where I come from and when I was 13. Keep it up!! I look forward to more!!

Oh... they're not so very tough. Truth is, they're scared as anything. They're budding, yes... but don't know what to do about that. Wanting to stop it from happening and wanting to be a flower all at the same time. In the end, what they 'do' about it is.... just do what the others are doing and hope it works. It takes a long time, sometimes, to figure out that there are other options.
Thanks for this.... Boy, it brought me back to that era. Very insightful and very well written. For some reason, in my mind... I see you sitting on a nearby bench... obverving for a while... and then starting to write...
Impressed again,
SNM
