The Wedding Ring

Darkness envelopes me like soft clean sheets.
Soft and reassuring.
I lean into it as to lean into strong embracing arms.
I look for comfort.
There's none to find.
The darkness turns on me.
I find myself uncomfortable and small.
Lonely and scared.
A small flicker of light shones from beside the door.
There he stands.
Waiting.
Watching.
The light from the end of his cigarette brightens with each inhale.
I can't see him. I hear him.
Breathing.
In.
Out.
I turn my back.
I don't want to see.
I don't want to hear.
I know he's leaving.
He can't find the words.
We've said all we need to say.
"Just go away!"
I want to yell.
I have no voice.
I'm all said out.
I hear him reach for the knob.
It turns.
Something tinckers to the floor.
He's gone.
I lie in the silence of the bed we once shared.
Afraid.
Slowly, I make my way to the door.
I don't dare turn on the light.
I don't want to see.
I'm not sure I want to know.
On my hands and knees like a groveling mutt I find the object on the ground.
It's surrounded by the soft, plush carpet.
It feels cool in my fingers.
Instantly I know.
It's over for real this time.
This object that once meant so much.
Was a symbol of love and devotion.
Tossed away.
Shoved aside.
I place it to my lips and cry.
