I noticed her as I was driving down the road.
I caught sight of her from the corner of my eye.
She stood shaking from limb to limb.
She looked out across the street afraid to move.
She was thin
dirty
scared
I pulled my car over quickly
and got out
I approached her slowly
As I neared she cowered.
I whispered to her
She was okay
I would help
Don't be afraid
I held out my hand to her palm up
she came closer
uncertain
afraid
I stayed where I was and talked to her
Its ok
You're all right
I'll take care of you
She must have believed me
She scooted over to me and sniffed my hand
She started to whine
She was wet and cold.
I had grabed an old blanket from the car
I wrapped her
picked her up
She should have weighed more.
I used my cell to call the nearest vet
They asked I bring her right away
She stood on the table shivering
snuggeling my chest
She had broken bones
scars
blood
She had been beaten
not long ago
She had been dumped
Left to die
Tears filled my eyes
I would not let her go.
I would love her
care for her
protect her
The vet patched her wounds
I would patch her heart
In return she showed much gratitude
snuggles
kisses
devotion
unconditional love
If I hadn't come along
Would anyone else had stopped
Would anyone else have cared
There are so many more
beaten
broken
bruised
Left to suffer
left to die
Its an unfair world when we are cruelest to those who love us most.

I loved this so much. My dog was rescued by mother and we have found out that rescued dogs are usually the most loving and appreciative. I hope that daisy is living the comfortable loved life that she seems to deserve. |

I'm not really a pet person me, but I was definitely touched by your poem. It made me want to take in one of those poor dogs and show him the love and devotion that he never got from his previous owners. I don't know why I would like to say this, but thank you for writing such a wonderful poem.

I wish we could treat people the same way they treat/mistreat animals. Your poem brought tears to my eyes. Take care of her.
God Bless You,
J~ |
