White Lie
August 20, 2004
Whoever told you they were okay,
As long you used them with care,
Didn’t know the extremes a white lie could go to,
And cause all of my despair.
A white lie seems so gentle,
Just a blanket thrown over what’s true,
For me to step right over,
Never suspecting a thing of you.
But webs of lies spun from white,
Can get into my way.
So soon I see that small mistake,
And wonder about the display.
And looking deeper, finding more,
White lies spread across the floor.
Now in a trance of disbelief,
I search to find what I can see is only a mistake,
And then I’ll find relief.
But nothing here shows signs of stopping,
Only more I cannot place.
I don’t remember being there,
I can’t remember that face.
The harder I tug on that fragile thread,
The truth unravels and brings the dread.
How could a white lie build up to this,
Leaving me empty in this abyss,
Wondering how all of this time,
All of these white lies came to exist.
