Guilt's Destruction

Contributed by lizabeth283 on Friday, 20th August 2004 @ 09:42:48 PM in AEST
Topic: selfstruggles

I had it once –
That light divine
So bright and pure
My soul did shine
But each year that passed
The light grew dimmer
Twenty-one years later
There’s barely a glimmer
A good person – I am
But that’s not what I seek
Perfection’s my goal
And havoc it wreaks
Because it is something
I’ll never attain
I’m always let down
Again and again
Consumed by guilt
From imperfections past
I wonder each day
How long this torment will last
Squelching my spirit
Engulfing my thoughts
Making me tired
Of this battle long fought
The answer is simple
Staring me in the face
The way to find joy
In this mortal place
Forgiving myself
Of all that I did
Accepting my faults
That for years I hid
Just trying my best
To do what is right
And then someday regaining
That heavenly light

Guilt is one of the more powerful emotions, and do as much damage as love and hate twisting the insides and scarring the soul.
You made a good job of this tricky subject.
Awesome write, I havent read the first, but this I liked.

Keep it up.

The heavy burden and feelings that guilt puts on us shines clearly here through your poem, which I found very enjoyable to read. Kudos to you, and keep on writing. :)
