Bob

Contributed by Stoney1 on Wednesday, 18th August 2004 @ 07:17:54 AM in AEST
Topic: didactic

My big brother Bob, was a swell guy
All who knew him, fell under his sway
The family swore he could charm
A bird from a tree
Bob, was a popular guy...

He was my hero, growing up
He could run faster
Pitch a ball harder
And fight his way
To the top of a melee...

In the sandlot
Down the street
When the gang chose
Up for football
It was always
Bob'ud include me...

Bob was compassionate
And Bob was fair
And when I really needed him
Bob was always there
To keep his little brother
On track

To fight his battles
And to watch his back
Until he was big enough
To take care of himself
That was my brother, Bob...

And when he went
Off to college
He left me home
Secure in the knowledge
That he'd be back...

A letter came
In the post to-day
It said that Bob
Had fallen ill
And slowly wasted away

Bob had a secret
Which he kept to himself
He confided in no one
Not even to me
So the town was shocked

To hear that Bob
Was coming home
To be buried,
And to learn
To our further dismay
That Bob was...gay.

p.s. This is about a fictional brother; I'm an only child.
Posted this in another
forum and got commiserations about my dead brother. g

Good feelings! You point out main stream society's problem of accepting people for who they are. This forces people to live in secret and undeserved shame. They do not choose who they are. Nice piece.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
