helpless man

Contributed by paula_kay23 on Tuesday, 17th August 2004 @ 02:26:38 PM in AEST
Topic: dedicatedpoems

the quiet and stillness of this room
empty feeling complimenting the gloom
shadows passing by his window
the hands of time moving so slow
echos of young times withering away
uncertainty with him will forever stay
trying his hardest to embrace time
so it doesnt slip away with the ebbing tide

i saw all this when i looked at him
saw his eyes full with tears to the brim
but i had to walk in with a dazzling smile
having to disturb him for a little while
he saw me and rage filled his face
a woman helping him was such a disgrace
reluctantly he gave in to his new found match
not with out a bite, kick and a scratch

courage pride and dignity, left in a heap,
the only three things he wanted to keep
he's not angry with me, i see it in his eyes
im not the one he wants to despise
he hates himself for being so weak
and the significant fact hes unable to speak
the oppertunity to say, 'i want it this way'
would make him peacefull, and want to stay

for what is there now, but dying alone
and shrinking away to skin and bone
waiting for an absolution never to come
waiting for all this to be undone
tranquility will overcome the sorrow
just for this night then theres tomorrow
yes, surely it came to soon
the quiet and stillness of this room....

Firstly, hoping not to sound patronising in any way, what a great service you provide in this world of ours, it cannot be easy sometimes dealing with people struggling through their twilight years.
Secondly, my praise for such a wonderful treatment of the subject. My uncle suffered from a stroke and is unable to do many of the simple tasks we take for granted.I can identify with what you wrote

It is so hard for them to lose their independence and dignity to age and infirmity. The fact that most are tucked away like used toys and forgotten except on special days, if at all, is so demeaning to them. God bless you for caring for them. I had to watch my beloved aunt slip away to a devastating illness and was there everynight and day to see her. I saw so many that never had visitors. The staff tries but there are just too many to get involved with. Sad commentary on our devotion and care of our aged loved ones.

wow this is really picturesque, i can feel all the emotions you did in the room. good for you to perform such a nurturing need to older people. i know if my grandma was still alive she would appreciate someone like you or me coming to visit her. great write :)
