“I’m scared”, she whispered
But no one was there
Except a shadow
Who edged closer
Until it brushed against her
“I’m lonely”, she whispered
Into the empty room
Past the shadow
Who seemed to listen
And maybe even understand
“I’m confused”, she whispered
This time speaking
To the shadow
Who held her hand
As tightly as a shadow can
“I know”, whispered Shadow
In a quiet voice
And she thought
That maybe he meant it
And he cried because he did

Interesting read. A little unnerving, probably the imagery rather than the subject matter. The best comfort in the darkness of despair are empathetic ghosts? Why not! Good write.

Oh, SNM . . . for, eh, reasons mentioned previously, this may join Roxbury Falls and Wings (Part II) in my favorites of your poetry.
This one sort of hurts to read . . . I've read it about three times and it doesn't get any easier. Still trying . . .
many hugs,

The struggle is hard the fight is long, May you have the strength to endure, and the will to overcome.
The poem was am eye opener, to the struggle, the emotions were vivid and heart felt.
It was Beautifully written.
Take Care

You're right, it isn't quite as elaborate on paper as it is in the mind. But the paper surely only doesn't have enough depth to support it well. The concept's got me, holding my mind "as tightly as a shadow can".
Beautiful.
Keep writing,
-Eve. |

I love love loved this - and don't think od it as simple at all - but your language is concise - so perhaps that is why you see it so-
You project so well, and I love the last lines
“I know”, whispered Shadow
In a quiet voice
And she thought
That maybe he meant it
And he cried because he did

Simple words, written down on paper that evoke elaborate mental images. It is very hard to completely convey the depth of the things we see in our heads, paper being two dimensional. However, as those words are lifted and float into my mind, they begin to formulate "shadows " of the things you see. And my shadow weeps with yours. Excellent write.

Shadows are, as much as they can possibly be, very comforting. They are where I expose my deepest emotions when I can't do it publicly. They do comfort and caress you in a way, and I think, being shadows, they do "know" and understand the darkness. I understand this well, SNM. You have done an excellent job here of conveying your thoughts.
Hugs,
Rita |

I think all of us have felt this way at one time. You may not remember the time or the place, but the feeling is remembered well. I remember it.
You have brought tears to my eyes and all I can say is..."I know." |

Wowie zowie, this is different. Reminds me in a way of the "pilgrim shadow" in Poe's Eldorado who spoke to the knight. Or maybe the shadow is Pazuzu... Only the Shadow knows... Cool write. Groovy.--the Moth |

Did you mean "he" or "she" in the last line?
I mean the second pronoun. I'm curious because I read it the other way. This is a very effective and sadly sweet write.
