Impossible Dream

Topic: HumorPoetry

We extol the virtues of experiencing new culture
Yet our hotel room must be spotless
Cleaner than the mind of a newly ordered nun
There's a cockroach in the pool, what is it doing there ?
The backstroke I believe sir,you must whisper to yourself

We never learn your hola, kalispera, dobre den
How quaint it is to us that you mispronounce our words
Where is our tea ?, all this coffee makes us barbarian
Bacon must be crispier, not smothered in so much oil
More strange that you will insist to drive on the wrong side of the road

You love us here, that much we believe
Our new, respectful and quirkiest of friends
The truth is its our tips that you really love
Discovering our paradise an impossible dream
Because paradise quite simply isnt planned

What right have we to order that the sun must shine each day
Where is the beer we love?,we shout
The food that we enjoy
There,at home,where it really belongs
This place isn't our backyard

So look around you,if you can
See golden sand, soft carpet by the water's edge
Look deep into the shimmering eyes, marvel at cobalt sea
It is not for you that these things are here
You are here for them

I loved this!! It made me smile when I read it esp this line---> "What right have we to order that the sun must shine each day" Cuz when my friend from England visited my islands recently, it rained all the time..and stopped the day he left....lol... He also found our food too spicy for him and his wife....
Good write..

January 1990. Funny... this brought me right back to a dining table in a wonderful foreign hotel. I remember now, as clearly as if it were yesterday, how terribly obnoxious the tourist at the next table became when he could not understand his waiter's broken English. In truth, I was impressed with their language skills... and was absolutely appalled at how rude the gentleman at the next table was. How dare he! He was, after all, in a Spanish speaking country! Ugh!

You have perfectly captured the unrealistic expectations of many tourists. I'm with you... I think they're missing the best part by expecting it to be 'like home'. Foolish!

Well done!
