I was only five,
When I lost my first tooth.
Momma and I were standing out of the rain,
On Main Street in a phone booth.
Momma took it from me, wrapped it in klenex,
Opened her purse and put it inside.
When we got home, she put it ,
Under my pillow where it could hide.
She explained to me as I fell asleep
I would be visited by the Tooth-Fairy.
She would take my tooth,
And leave a present for me.
The Tooth-Fairy visited alot,
Until the year I turned seven.
Then one night I caught her,
I wished I could have died and gone to Heaven.
I remember tossing and turning,
In my little bed.
When all of a sudden,
I felt a hand under my head.
I thought to myself,
I finally caught the Tooth-Fairy.
But when I pulled the covers away,
Momma was all I could see.
I remember,
I started to cry.
As momma told me,
The Tooth-fairy was,
Nothing more than a lie.
The thunder,
Did BOOM!
As my innocence,
Was buried in it's tomb.
How I found out,
About the Easter Bunny
Well that story
Is rather funny.
When I was small,
We lived on A farm.
Momma thought the City
Was to full of harm.
We went to Church,
That long, long day.
But at home,
I wanted to stay.
I knew it was Easter and when we got home,
We would have a big Egg Hunt.
I sat on the window seat and watched,
As momma pulled off another stunt.
I seen her with basket in hand,
As the treasures from inside she hid.
Momma called us all outside,
And handed a basket to each kid.
I remember,
I started to cry
As momma told me,
The Easter Bunny was another lie.
The thuder,
Did BOOM!
As my innocence
Was buried in it's tomb.
Here it is last but not least.
The story of the one and only Santa Claus.
I will tell this one,
Without even a pause.
Momma told us,
About Good Ole' Saint Nick.
How he could go,
Up and down the chimney ral quick.
So,
Here's my little story,
About how I caught Santa,
ER! I mean momma in all her glory.
The house was,
All scary and dark,
It was so quite,
The dog didn't even bark.
I crept down the stairs,
To see if I could catch a glance.
I wanted to capture Satna,
And I was sure this was my only chance.
All I could see was momma,
Sitting, wrapping presents on the floor.
It took all of my might,
Not to bolt out the front door.
I remember asking her,
If she was Santa's special Elf,
Momma smiled with a tear in her eye, as she told me,
"It was time to put my innocence on the shelf."
I started
To cry.
As momma told me
Just like the others Santa was a lie.
The thunder,
Did BOOM!
As my innocence,
Was buried in it's tomb.
From then on,
Every thing happened so fast.
As you can see,
My innocenece just didn't last.

I have a 9 year old daughter. I get to see that thunder, and watch as her innocence fades. There are times we share tears, as it gets chipped away. Other times I am proud as heck to watch as she starts to figure out how to become more independant. We all lose our innocence, you've captured it's essence well.

I understand how you feel, it is good to be innocent to somethings, but it is also good to know the truth so that it can make you strong. In my case this helps me to make good decisions but I have to admit there are things I wish I did not know and there are some things I am glad I don't know yet. |

I enjoyed your poem so much!
I remember finding out it was a lie.....
but -NAUGHTY ME- played along with it until I was 11 years old
-[now that I look back I did well as I got more money, more eggs and more gifts than I deserved! |
