Although I must remember
it is best to forget
the winds that chill December
must blow involute
and reap the husk of autumn
all withered now and wan
the brittle heaps as solemn
as graves unseen by man
I knew the time was turning
the moment could not last
and black the fields were burning
all vestige of the past
My joy became my sorrow
my sadness found a song
forgotten on the morrow
as leaves blown wild along
into the heart of winter
to freeze them sere and raw
until the ice will splinter
in springtime’s desperate thaw.
