talking it out

Talking it out

He said: The joy you give I cannot repay.
I am too old, too tired, too gray.
Your love has been a fountain of youth,
But I look in the mirror and see the truth.
My heart hurts, I love you so.
The kindest thing I could do is go.
Let you find someone better than me,
Young and brave like I used to be.
She smiled: Why on earth do you say such things?
Don’t you know the hurt it brings?
I can’t tell you what it means to hear
The words you whisper in my ear.
I’m so happy, I wish you knew
How I’ve waited, wanted, longed for you.
And now here you are, strong and fine.
I can’t wait to tell the world you’re mine.
He sighed: There was a day when I walked tall,
I knew no fear, I knew it all.
Life was just a game to win,
Lovers were but moments of sin.
But now my back is bent with years,
My face worn rough by smiles and tears.
Could you love me for what I am now?
For the life of me, I don’t know how.
She laughed: Silly old fool, don’t you understand?
I would never have loved that younger man.
So full of conceit: uncaring, unwise.
So little to love, so much to despise.
I want a man gentle, loving, and kind.
A man who loves me body and mind.
Don’t wish for what you used to be,
Just take my hand and grow old with me.
They kissed.
