I stand beside her quietly
Deafened by the silence in the air
My hands travel in kind
Comforting strokes
From her glossy ears
To her heaving sides
Lungs laboring for every breath
I know it will not be long now
For her pain to end
Memories fill my eyes with tears
This dying old friend
That now lay so lifeless
In my arms
Is my greatest companion
My most treasured friend
My Charcoal puppy
I always used to chase
But never quite could catch
Tell about my day
Hold when I was lonely
And cry to when I was sad
She was always there
Always close by
Now she lay motionless
On the vets cold, pitiless table
Gasping for each breath of air
Sickness invades her insides
And her atrophied bones
Refuse further work
Looking in her eyes
Beyond the cloudiness
Through which she cannot see
Lay the reflection
Of her heart and soul
Bigger than the sky
And brighter than the sun
I gaze into her soul
Which stares back into mine
I feel my heart melt
As she slips out of this world
And into the next
Never to suffer again
I know that no longer
Can I chase her but not quite catch
Or tell about my day
Hold when I am lonely
Or cry to when I am sad
Although she is gone
I know I have not lost her
For she has always been there
And always will be
My charcoal puppy
Will always have a place
Deep inside my heart
