Fallen innocence

Topic:
war

As I looked before the hardened troops,
Their heroism vanished,
And heard the order to advance,
All patriotism turned to panic.
Fix bayonets, await the charge, for in the days gone before,
Previous journeys into hell had destroyed
Any notions of the romance of war.
As the shells exploded around us, and the wounded ceased their crying,
Truth lay stone dead, and Justice alongside it, dying.
We look on as morality was slaughtered,
And buried our fallen innocence.
But I looked before the hardened troops,
The final order did sound.
We realised only the dead see the end of war,
And with that charged over the mound.
