The Extra Mile

Contributed by puppy_dog_eyes on Thursday, 5th August 2004 @ 10:56:03 AM in AEST
Topic: EmotionalPoetry

Another year has blown by but doesn't lift the pile of stones I have become
Trapped in a cage of my own fear
Not a loner as all too often they see me
Loneliness is there but locked behind the eyes of my uncertainty

Birthday cards sit on the mantlepiece, counting takes little effort at all
All wishes from family and friends the number I tally
Nieces and nephews now write their own
Draw happy smiling faces all over the back

So I ask the one who knows me best as she sips her drink and smiles
What is it about me that people don't seem to like ?
Which buttons do I need to press to make them long term friends ?
There should be a rulebook I could follow and learn

Be yourself has always been advice that people gave
This code I have followed but somehow it has failed
I know I have given more than I would ever take
So now am I selfish in this pursuit, this quest ?

Springs of self pity I have drank from before
But this more a puzzle than a desperate cry
Somehow feeling I have to change, to make a better man
Not knowing how, I hold out my hand, time to admit defeat

The moment she told me, I realised it was true
Yet what I have always known, deep in my mind
Self doubt creeps in even though I make the link
I hold back, afraid, friendships drown

So today I am wearing my brave face
As so often before I will smile and say hello
I will try much harder than I've ever done before
To go the extra mile

Oh wow....I know EXACTLY what you are saying with this verse. I don't feel as if you are being selfish at all and I have asked myself these same questions. Very moving write that touched me deeply.
