The Pressed Rose

Contributed by kidpoet_213 on Saturday, 31st July 2004 @ 10:26:37 AM in AEST
Topic: LoveRemembered

The other day...
While going through a box of old books...
I made a most wondrous discovery...
The diary of a young woman... dated 1916...
And from its looks...
It had been well preserved

I still couldn't believe my eyes...
Scattered among the many detailed entries... of a brilliant and bittersweet life
I found a photograph... faded with the ages...
And a rose... pressed in between the pages...
And a very detailed description of a very romantic evening of yesteryear...
An enchanting evening at the Summer Gala Ball Formal

"I remember it like yesterday... when Teague came a- courtin'...
He put on his Sunday best...
To ask my father for his permission
And as the evening sun set in the western sky...
My Teague arrived...
To escort me to the dance...

My father was so taken...
He brought out his Brownie...
'Smile'... he said
And snapped the photograph

Just a young man... Teague was...
He bore a great look of strength and innocence
When he pinned the corsage to my dress
I had never had the chance to be near him...
For up to that moment... I had always admired him from a distance...

The hours ticked away slowly....
As we danced into the night...
We danced so close... so tight...
He held me in his arms... as I stared into his wondrous blue eyes...
Looking deep within...
And seeing love reflected back in his grin

We shared conversation...
Tea and crumpets too...
We became good friends that night
As we sat staring up at the stars and moon
We tried to dodge the customary social graces...
We had fun... despite the many looks and stares we got from the local faces

At the end of this enchanting and perfect evening...
I surrendered wholly... when he asked...
A goodnight kiss ensued...
With fond memories and mementos to last...
In the form of a pressed rose and a photograph"

Now both faded and well worn...
